What Is An Entrepreneur?

The term entrepreneur is not straightforward to define; that’s because when you start asking yourself the question “What is an entrepreneur?” you realise that there are many different ways to approach the answer. In attempting to respond to this question, I found that it raised even more thought-provoking questions! I began to wonder whether all successful entrepreneurs share an inherent strength of mind, which leads them to behave in a certain way or can anyone learn to become an entrepreneur?

What Is An Entrepreneur? Typical Characteristics

Often people believe that what makes an entrepreneur different is their tenacious attitude to risk, especially financial, than the majority of the population. These are typical characteristics of an entrepreneur. It is certainly true that entrepreneurs refuse to accept conventional societal norms in many areas of their lives, but particularly with regard to working for an organisation as an employee.

This ties in with the following definition of ‘what is an entrepreneur‘ from Doug Mellinger, the co-founder of Foundation Source, who said: “An entrepreneur is someone who will do anything to keep from getting a job.”

For the majority of people working within a traditional business, there will never be the opportunity to radically challenge or effect change on the way things are done, if they have an amazing idea. This explains why entrepreneurs, by their need to be dynamic and pioneer new ideas, always choose to work outside of these limitations.

what is an entrepreneurEntrepreneurs will always have a clear vision for their future, which is the result of being highly focused, motivated and innovative. What differentiates an entrepreneur is their complete grit and determination to make things happen. It may be that not everything they undertake will be an overnight success, but they will analyse the progress and viability of any business strategy. If necessary, the entrepreneur will make adjustments to realign his business with where he wants it to be.

The mindset of an entrepreneur is so resolute and unwavering that he will only concentrate his efforts on a positive outcome.

As Jon Burgstone, himself an entrepreneur, teacher and co-author of the book Breakthrough Entrepreneurship said:

“Every time you want to make any important decision, there are two possible courses of action. You can look at the array of choices that present themselves, pick the best available option and try to make it fit. Or, you can do what the true entrepreneur does: Figure out the best conceivable option and then make it available.” (

Hopefully, the above information has clarified the question of what is an entrepreneur?

My secondary question of ‘can anyone be an entrepreneur?’ can also now be answered. The ability to be an entrepreneur is possible for anyone who can consistently demonstrate the willingness and determination to succeed, no matter what obstacles may appear.
