There are famous entrepreneurs all around us, working in every field of business from the media through to computing and the Internet. I thought it would be interesting to look at a couple of profiles of famous entrepreneurs in a bit more detail to understand what really makes them tick. When you start to think about famous entrepreneurs you end up with a long and varied list, which spans business interests from telecommunications to restaurants to shipping lines to supermarkets.
In fact, I think it is possible to say that you will find famous entrepreneurs running businesses in pretty much every single industry known to man!
This is because entrepreneurs will find a field that they are interested in and passionate about and use their creativity and vision to offer something new to the marketplace.
As one famous entrepreneur said: “Find your passion… then it is no longer work!”
L.A. Reid, co-founder of LaFace Records.
Sir Richard Branson – He started his business from humble beginnings in the early 1970’s as a mail order record company. In 1972 he launched a chain of record shops called Virgin Records. Virgin’s approach to business, even in those early days, was always more daring and less risk averse than that of their mainstream competitors. Also, the company was not afraid to diversify and in 1984, Branson started Virgin Airways, which would soon become a major competitor to British Airways. In 1993, he began running Virgin Trains and Virgin Mobile was launched in 1999.
Their adverts, especially for Virgin Atlantic, suggest a sense of humour and a desire to push the boundaries. It is worth noting that Branson has had unsuccessful ventures too, such as Virgin Vodka and Virgin Cola, but his drive and determination to be successful has always helped him to look forward to the next big idea. One of this famous entrepreneurs latest ventures is Virgin Galactic, offering commercial space flights for around $200,000 a ticket! His net worth is estimated to be about $4.2 billion (Source Forbes.com).
Mark Zuckerberg – One thing that all famous entrepreneurs have in common is that they create a product, brand or service, which is often ground breaking. Zuckerberg co-founded Facebook, one of the largest social networking sites in the world, which changed forever the way people interact with each other. He showed promise as a youngster programming computers and writing software but it was during his time at Harvard University that early ideas for Facebook began to emerge. He initially designed a programme called Facemash for college students to vote on pictures of fellow students, but it was after this was closed down that the concept of Facebook began.
Zuckerberg has publicly faced many challenges since Facebook began, notably the highly publicised legal dispute over whose idea it originally was. He has also famously declined billion dollar bids to buy Facebook outright. Despite facing a mass of hostility since the IPO of Facebook in May 2012, Zuckerberg continues to run the company according to his rules. His story is a wonderful example of individual accomplishment, the sole pursuit of an ideal, and confidence in his ability to change the world. As of 2012, Mark Zuckerberg’s net worth is estimated at $14.7 billion – not bad for a 28-year-old who is undeniably one of the most famous American entrepreneurs of all time! (Source Wikipedia.org).
